Holidays/Festivals

Gilberto François (Betico) Croes, the man affectionately known as the Father of the Aruban Nation is honored every year on his birthday; January 25th. Scarcely in any other part of the world is there as much reverence and admiration for one man as there is for Betico Croes here in Aruba. While political and social leaders come and go throughout countries and throughout history, very few of them make huge, revolutionary changes to their homeland, and even fewer do it through peace and diplomacy the way Betico did.

On this most special day in Aruba, countless people will gather all throughout the region to celebrate his life and his spirit, keeping his memory and all of the wonderful things he did for the people alive, as well as passing it down for future generations to remember. The festivities will include a number of fun and diverse things to do such as various sporting events, food sales, group and family-friendly activities, and many other things.

The early history of Aruba which Betico would much later on help reshape, gives us an idea of why he was so important and why the people still love him so much today. Shortly after the island’s “discovery” by European explorers in the 1400’s, Aruba would begin being passed around, bartered, and traded by the various world powers that rose and fell in the Colonial tide sweeping out of Europe during that time period. After centuries of governmental change it finally settled under Dutch rule in 1816.

And by the time of the 20th century, Aruba has secured itself the very useful role of managing an oil refinery for Venezuela’s newly discovered crude oil. This provided an invaluable, self-sustaining economic tool for the island and helped to begin the stirring of independent thought and self-rule. Part of this newly brewing self-reliant spirit was the fact that by this time life in Aruba was completely different from life in Holland and it made little sense to continue being governed by the same regulations and laws as the other Dutch Antilles. They were governed by the reigning powers in Curacao and had little benefit to residents of the island.

That’s when the true cries for status aparte began to grow. But it wouldn’t become a real movement until Betico Croes arrived on the political scene and brought a combination of intelligence, fierceness, and perseverance that both inspired and motivated the rest of his people. With an incredible strategy and optimism about upcoming triumph, a national anthem was penned and a committee formed to design the Aruban flag even before Betico traveled to Holland to make the case for independence.

But all of those dreams and all of that effort would be rewarded in March of 1977 when Betico Croes returned home to a throng of cheering Arubans, celebrating their newly granted independence. It wouldn’t ultimately end up going into effect until January 1st of 1986, tragically and inconceivably just one day after Betico was involved in a terrible car accident which caused him to remain in a coma until passing away in November of the following year.

But that isn’t what the people of Aruba will remember on this day. On this day they will raise the flag high to honor and celebrate the man who gave them their long-awaited freedom, the Father of the Aruban Nation; Betico Croes.

With an incredible electrifying energy, pulsating music, and beyond festive atmosphere, Carnival is the biggest celebration of the year in an island known for throwing the world’s biggest and most amazing parties. And guess what else? You’re invited! Carnival is a month long, high energy festival that combines a myriad of activities and event into one big explosion of fun.

Participants, fans, and observers can all expect to see music competitions, pageants, fantastic parades, street parties, and many other action-packed events throughout this entire period all over the island. The local residents especially look forward to the catchy calypso and Road March tunes.

And of course, we could never forget the amazing display of vibrant and bright color. An eclectic rainbow descends on the entire island in the form of magnificent floats, glittering costumes, shimmering clothing and apparel, and the incredibly luminescent decorations. Come and enjoy the Carnival queen coronations, bass-pumping sound trucks, and all of the rest of the hip-gyrating and booty-shaking madness that takes over Aruba this time of year!

The different parades alone are more than worth the trip. In addition to the Lighting Parade, thousands of people enjoy the Jouvert Morning Pajama Party, Children’s Parades, the Grand Carnival Parade, which is held in San Nicolas, and of course, the exciting conclusion to the entire event; the Grand Carnival Parade in Oranjestad. After that, the King Momo midnight burning signifies the end of Carnival season in Aruba. But not to worry, the spirit will rise again the following year as another round of the world’s greatest party ensues!

Although Carnival is a pre-Lenten festival, which is celebrated in many countries all around the world, it has its own unique origins and history of each place and Aruba is no different. It first began here as a series of small street festivals in 1954. Prior to that, Aruba’s oldest private social club had the first Oranjestad pre-Lenten celebration way back in 1944.

After the smaller street celebrations of 1954, the next year various districts and clubs got together to plan a more organized and all-inclusive public event and crown the first official Carnival Queen. The traditional Grand Parades began in 1957 and in 1966 the official Carnival organizing body was created. The twinkling nighttime extravaganza known as the Lighting Parade was added in 1981 and the party has just been growing and growing every year since.

And while we are quite certain that numerous other locations would say the same thing about their Carnival festivals, we can’t help but feel like there is just something a little extra special about the one here in Aruba. Maybe it’s because the One Happy Island is truly a place of celebration and excitement all year-round and that just makes us a little bit more skilled at throwing a massive blowout.

Or maybe it’s because tourists and guests who have visited Carnivals all across the globe say that ours is the only one they come to now. Or maybe it is simply because there is something magical in the island air in Aruba that has to be experienced to be understood. Regardless of what it is, it is here, and we hope that you will be as well.

The Casibari Jazz Festival is making its inaugural debut Sept. 20th of this year at the Casibari Music Café and Grill in Aruba and believe us when we tell you that you do not want to miss it! Local residents, as well as guests and visitors from across the globe will be making their way to the One Happy Island to enjoy the start of this new tradition. Boasting an incredible lineup of talented musicians from all over the world, this event is sure to light the nights on fire on the 20th and 21st.

Formally known as the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival and running for a dozen years prior, the event was canceled last year only to be rebranded and re-launched this year with a great new look and venue, along with a ton of new activities to surround the great music and food. The Casibari Café has a great local feel to it and is the perfect location for this reimagined music festival where Jazz, Blues, and Latin stylings all blend together for one weekend to fill the night air with smooth sounds and haunting rhythms.

Between the food court, the restaurant itself, two bars, and a coffee and whiskey lounge, there are plenty of places to get a bite to eat or a beverage to enjoy. There is also an art fair going on near the food court area where attendees can get a look at some of the work of local talents and traveling international artists as well. There is no shortage of culture and fun in this jam-packed weekend. The performers will delight and engage fans from two different stages; the Balashi Stage and the Do It Stage.

And speaking of those talented performers, we kid you not when we say that this is one star-studded schedule of incredibly gifted musicians spanning all types of diverse and unique backgrounds. On Friday, September 20th the listeners will be treated to the sounds of Tony Succar and Robert Jeand’or, the multi-cultural and multi-talented lineup of the Ara Caribbean Jazz Sextet, then Robert Jeand’or retakes the stage with his own crew to perform double duty, and the night will close out with Aruba’s very own and newly formed Michael Bremo Quintet, performing together at the Casibari Café for the first time.

The next night, Saturday the 21st, the second night of the festival will undoubtedly bring the perfect ending to what is sure to be an amazing debut of this newly reborn tradition. The music will be kicked off by Randal Corsen & Friends joined by Tania Kross and Dibo D. From there, Count Tutu will bring their unique blend of jazz, funk, psychedelic rock, and West African rhythms to the stage. Next, Antonio Bello and friends will produce that sweet jazz sound that Antonio helped bring to the island and popularize with the locals nearly 20 years ago.

And to end the show on a high note, Oruba Oruba, a tribal fusion group will perform. They will also pre-release their new album Tatumba during the festival itself as a thank you to the promoters of the event and as a special treat to the fans. If you are a music lover the only advice we can offer you is simply do not miss the amazing two-night debut of the Casibari Jazz Festival.

HEAR YE: April 27th marks the birthday of King Willem Alexander of the Netherlands and celebrations are in order! The people of Aruba will be honoring his majesty with an island wide birthday bash fit for royalty. There will be a number of fun-filled events and gatherings, along with fantastic food, music, culture, and plenty of family-friendly activities. This yearly event is one of the most exciting and looked forward to days on the calendar for locals and tourists and we hope that you will be a part of it this year. The other Dutch Caribbean islands also join in the celebration.

As far as the festivities in Aruba go, there will be an official government ceremony, which is usually held in downtown Oranjestad at Wilhelmina Park. The ceremony to honor King Willem is both a historic and modern-day themed event and is loads of fun and entertainment for the entire family. It is followed by a parade involving Aruba’s military and scouting groups.

Although it is a semi-independent nation, Aruba is still considered a member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, although not a part of the country called the Netherlands. It is similar to the United Kingdom in the sense of being a sovereign, self-governing nation in union with a larger nation, but not under its rule as Northern Ireland and Scotland are in relation to England. For this reason, many holidays celebrated in the Netherlands are also held in Aruba as well.

Following the official events held at Wilhelmina Park, the entire region breaks out into a celebration that only the One Happy Island knows how to put on. There will numerous sporting events taking place, kite flying contests, several street fairs and mini parades, as well as multiple other fun activities for the whole family throughout various locations such as parks, beaches, large parking lots, and community centers.

You can also expect an island-wide smorgasbord of local and traditional food, centered mainly around the Dutch history of the last few hundred years of Aruba’s existence. Orange is the color of the day as the Dutch Royal Family hails from the House of Orange. The streets will be filled with bright and vibrant orange attire and apparel that people can find, adding to the festivity of an already celebratory atmosphere

Restaurants, bars, flea markets, and other business which get involved in the party often times offer wonderful specials, discounts, and other perks to patrons on King’s Day. But also be aware that since this is a national holiday, nearly all other types of merchants will either close early or be closed all day. These include such business as gasoline stations, grocers and supermarkets, and most other shops and stores.

This is a day where the people all come together to show their love for their King and celebrate together on one of the happiest and most beautiful places in the world, the island nation Aruba. We welcome you with open arms and a warm smile and we certainly hope you can join us on this incredible day.

Every year on March 18th, the One Happy Island celebrates what is commonly referred to as “Aruba Day”, but the official title is National Anthem and Flag Day. That is because of the important symbolic meaning of both of those national milestones, as they were both created before Betico Croes even set foot in Holland to argue for Aruba’s independence. They are a testament to the will and determination of the people and their leader; the Father of the Aruban Nation.

The blue, yellow, red, and white flag will be flying high all across the island while thousands of local residents, guests, and visitors pack the streets and various venues to celebrate the independent spirit that is Aruba. Market stands will pop up all over the place offering tee shirts, banners, bandanas, caps and hats, and numerous other items of apparel with an Aruban flag theme for purchase.

Dozens of activities and fun-filled events will be taking place all over as well. Sports such as Bolas Criollas (a team sport from Venezuela, which came over with immigrants that arrived here in the nations’ early years) is always played during this very special day. Another incredibly fun tradition and one which is extremely popular with the children is a Dutch game known as “Spel zonder grenzen”, or games without boundaries. In this activity, sack races, pillow fights, waxed-pole climbing, and many other whacky and whimsical competitions take place.

Geared more for the adults, Flag Day also offers a traditional folkloric celebration, which takes place in the Plaza Betico Croes. It features traditional food and other various treats and goodies. Musical presentations are performed by winners of the local song festival. The Ribbon Dance is a patriotic dance where both men and women display their flag-colored costumes in full celebration of this glorious day.

The participants dance around a pole, braiding and weaving ribbons made up of the colors of the national flag. These ribbons are attached to the top of the pole. As they move rhythmically to the beat of the Danza, Waltz, Tumba, or Mazurka, they must execute both timing and skill to produce the end result, which is the colors of the flag braided around the pole.

There are a number of local museums which will hold various celebratory events featuring Aruban culture and diverse traditions all throughout the island. And of course, there will also be plenty of places to enjoy a wide variety of traditional food such as Cabrito stoba (Kid stew), Keri Keri (minced shark), Pisca Temera (pickled fish), Cocada (a delicious and sweet offering made of coconut and sugar), as well as sweet breads and other local cuisine.

Even though this highly celebrated day brings an incredible turnout and attendance all throughout the island, individual locations and events are rarely too crowded to enjoy as there are plenty of activities going on everywhere at the same time. This keeps people spread out and on the move from place to place, trying to soak in as much excitement and as many experiences as possible on this patriotic day known as Flag Day.
